My start in the field of marketing and communications began in a college work-study program in 1989. I worked in the student services office at Palo Alto Community College in San Antonio. I was tasked with creating flyers for student organizations and posting them around campus. This was the first time I worked on an Apple computer, the Macintosh 128k with its 9-inch display! Since then, I've only ever worked on an Apple computer.
In 1992, I transferred to Texas State University (back then, it was called Southwest Texas) in San Marcos. I got a job working in the corporate marketing department of Professional Food-Services, Inc. (PFM), which was the company that contracted with the university to operate all food operations on campus. SWT was the first campus to have a food court in the PFM operations, therefore that's why the marketing department was located here instead of the corporate headquarters in Florida. I was offered a full time position as assistant marketing manager, so I dropped out of school in favor of the position. PFM was later bought out by Chartwells, which continues to operate on campus. They moved the corporate offices out of state, so it was time to find a new job.
In 1997, I found my next job as a media coordinator in Austin, at an automotive advertising agency. Three years later, the owner decided to dissolve the company and work for a client as a general manager at a dealership. At that time, I asked the owner to refer his clients to me, and they have been my clients ever since and I've picked up a few more over the years. The majority of my work was creating newspaper display ads, copywriting and producing radio and TV commercials, and point of purchase materials. Around 2010, dealerships drastically stopped running newspaper ads and my business revenue plummeted. I limped along for a few years then decided I had to figure out how to get into the digital world. That's when I went back to school and majored in Mass Communications Digital Media Innovation. Learning how to code opened that world up and now my business is thriving due to my aquired coding skills.
